Happy Chap Goh Meh

Time passes so rapidly. It is Chap Goh Meh already!!
Chap Goh Meh (元宵节) is the fifteenth day of the first month in lunar calendar. It also means that Chinese New Year celebration will come to an end after tonight. Why so fast??

Chap Goh Meh is also know as 'Lantern Festival'. During this time, many places there are chinese will be decorated with chinese lantern. One of the popular activities is to solve the riddles under the lantern.

Here comes some of the riddles...

Riddle 1:
I am the beginning of the end, and the end of time and space. I am essential to creation, and I surround every place. What am I?       (The letter e. End, timE, spacE, Every placE)

Riddle 2:
What has a head, a tail, is brown, and has no legs?        (A penny)

Riddle 3:
Lighter than what
I am made of,
More of me is hidden
Than is seen.      (Iceberg)

Since it's Chinese thingy let do some Chinese riddles:
乖(打一成语)—— (乘人不备)
进水行不成(打一字)—— (衍)
三八多面手(打《红楼梦》人名)—— (巧姐)

Did you know? Chinese also enjoy glutinous ball (汤圆) during Chap Goh Meh. The Chinese people believe the round shape of the balls, and the bowls in which they are served symbolize family togetherness, and that eating tangyuan may bring the family happiness and good luck in the new year. This is a time for another reunion before the Chinese New Year end.

During this day, females will toss mandarin oranges into the sea. This is a traditional practise to look for good lovers during the fifteenth. Guy will get the mandarines tossed by the girls to get to know them. Nowadays, people are still practicing this with tossing tangerines written with contacts. But now lots are given facebook instead. Time has changed aye?

A street party coupled with singing, drum and dance performances will be held at Jalan Pasar in Klang this Sunday (24/2/13) from 9pm to 11pm in celebration of Chap Goh Meh. If you have nothing to do tonight, go join the fun.

Will be in George Town? The state government's Chap Goh Meh celebration at the Esplanade having the tradition practice of tossing mandarin oranges into the sea at night. Girls you may want to toss the mandarine and guys, watch out for the mandarine tossed out by the pretty girls. So much fun! Just go soak in the atmosphere!
